Not quite, the average person manages his life well and a one hour discussion will show you that the average person can understand politics as much as you do.
However, 95% of the population does not really care for politics, only for their personal and close relatives situation.
They are perfectly fine with being ruled over by an oligarchy as long as the economy is good.
There is an illusion that we had something of democracy in the 50s 60s but that was really just because technology and peaceful trade brought strong economic progress.
