Leftists have a pathological need to feel smarter, more educated, more moral, more informed than other people. Ironically, this is because they are hopelessly average. Academics famously believe they are entitled to more than they get (which is already far too much according to their value added), and thus support socialism because they imagine they will get more of the pie that way. TL;DR bully nerds. They are the cause of most social ills in the world.
