After vetoing a bill extending aid to Ukrainian citizens in Poland, President Nawrocki explained that Polish public finances and “political and social emotions have changed.” He then offered his precise reasoning for his veto, as cited by Do Rzeczy.
“The law proposed three and a half years ago should be amended today. I am convinced that all major political circles clearly declare that the 800+ benefit should only be granted to refugees from Ukraine who work. (…) The bill I received on aid for Ukrainian citizens does not make this correction. I remain unchanged and intend to fulfill my obligations. The 800+ benefit should only be granted to Ukrainians who make the effort to work. The same applies to healthcare,” he noted.
“If we look at healthcare and notice a certain preference for Ukrainians compared to Poles, and the fact that Ukrainians are entitled to healthcare regardless of whether they take up employment and pay health insurance contributions or not, then we find ourselves in a situation in which Polish citizens are treated worse in their own country than our guests from Ukraine,” the president stressed.
Nawrocki did clarify that Poland is still supporting Ukraine on the ground in its fight against Russia.
“We are still a nation open to help. And that remains unchanged. Nor does our strategic goal – Poland’s interest is to militarily support Ukraine in this conflict, because the Russian Federation is a threat to the world,” said the president.
Nawrocki received praise from Law and Justice (PiS) MP Janusz Kowalski, among others. “Respect, Mr. President Nawrocki, Poland is for Poles! No privileges [for] temporary guests in our Polish home. There is no consent for a Pole to be treated worse than a Ukrainian,”
