An angry café patron in Los Palacios y Villafranca, Spain, was recently arrested for allegedly setting fire to the eatery because the staff told him they had run out of mayonnaise.
Last Wednesday, the staff and customers of a café in the municipality of Los Palacios y Villafranca, Seville, got the fright of their lives when a man sprayed petrol on the bar and set it on fire. The man, whose identity has not been revealed, went to the restaurant with his son and ordered two sandwiches. Surveillance cameras show him getting up from his table and talking to one of the waiters. The 50-something patron reportedly asked for mayonnaise for his sandwich, but was told that they didn’t have any. He then asked another waiter and was told the same thing, so he just stormed out of the café, walked to a nearby gas station, and came back with a bottle of petrol.
According to local news outlets, the mayonnaise enthusiast once again asked the café staff if they had his favorite sauce, and when he got a negative answer, he just poured the 1.5-litre bottle of flammable fluid on the bar and set it on fire. The café was practically full at the time, and everyone ran out when they saw the flames, including the angry, mayonnaise-loving pyromaniac. Luckily, the staff used fire extinguishers to put out the fire, and only minimal material damage was reported.
In the ensuing chaos, the arsonist accidentally set his own left hand on fire as he fled the scene. He was apprehended by police shortly after and is now awaiting sentencing. The café described the incident as “something surreal” and praised the staff for acting quickly and minimizing the damage. The blaze caused an estimated $9,500 in material damage, but luckily, no one except the angry patron was injured.
