The primary issue with being a hobo is being harassed by the law or other human beings that refuse to mind their own business, with the bike and raft combo you are highly likely to have superior terrain and speed at all times. With a mountain bike and a small raft you greatly minimize the amount of corridors that you traverse.

These days rafts can be very lightweight and fit into rucksacks, it is no problem at all to ride a bicycle 100+ miles and then switch to a water route.
