Racoons are vicious and what actually gets into trash.
Possums just get blamed and also falsely thought to be disease carriers.
They're actually incredibly resistant to rabies and LOVE to eat pests like ticks to the point that just one possum has statistically significant effects on tick populations in it's territory.
Pretty sure I got a couple around my house and my dog hasn't gotten a tick in years.

Possums might opportunistically go for chicks or eggs but mainly eat bugs and small invertebrates.
