I just have a black and white Brother printer. Laser. Bought it almost 10 years ago. Never had a problem. When it ran out of ink the first time, I bought a giga ink-thing that can print almost 3000 pages, and put it in, and it's been working ever since. I print maybe once a month.

They were more concerned about being able to figure out who printed manifestos and shit like that.

I have a 15 yo HP laserjet where I buy non-OEM laser ink , and it's been working like nothing else .
I even bought a 2nd identical used one as backup, in case this one dies.
However, anywhere else where you need something more modern other than just raw black-and-white printing , HP is an issue.
I have an Epson, and I have 2 Brother printers.
I like Brother better, because I can stick a cheap laser cartridge made by some non-brand and it just works, like HP did 15 years ago.
but YMMV.

there is zero reason for serial numbers besides gun confiscation. they havent solved a single murder, ever. a barrel isnt "fingerprinted" to give each projectile a unique print. it's complete bullshit. when you know you know.

Everything you print in color (and probably B&W too) has a dot pattern printed on it that uniquely identifies your printer.

Certain things that you can try to scan or try to print contain dot patterns ("constellation") that the printer will recognize and refuse to process.

And that's just in the Land Of The Free. I dunno what happens internally to printers in places like China.

Xerox developed this surreptitious tracking code "to assuage fears that their color copiers could be used to counterfeit bills"[1] and received U.S. Patent No. 5515451 describing the use of the yellow dots to identify the source of a copied or printed document.[2][3] The scheme was then widely deployed in other printers, including those made by other manufacturers.
i have to wonder if there are actually any examples of some criminal being caught through this method though

There's also the fact that even printer cartridges themselves for how often they are changed between models and manufacturers are another potential identifier. Even if your printers can't be traced to you directly and you're a ghost on the computer using airgaped devices for all your wirtong and designing the purchase of a bunch of ink carts for specific models as indicated by their dot matrix could still be tied to you.
