Free college is a terrible waste of resources. That's how you get a bunch of useless people getting education in useless fields. College should be more affordable, but never free. People need to take on some risk and responsibility so they don't waste it on stupid shit.

Universal healthcare would be nice, but I really don't want to pay for someone to get a gender studies degree. Free college, if it ever happens here, should only be for useful degrees.

They are if you add health insurance, daycare, school lunch, pension. Somewhat depends on the state you live in but VAT, property tax, income tax, gains and so on add up to similar numbers. Which EU country have you lived in?

If the people need socialism then why is the government taxing them?

Eliminate taxes on the working class and then we'll talk about if they need more government.

If you have a good job in the US you get all that beisdes free college. Problem is that doing this ties people into serious have and have not baskets where if you just live in a bumfuck town, even if you are very smart and capable of the only job in town is at a gas station you get no basic support to enjoy life from.

You would think rural communities would be the ones all for more gibs because they actually really would use and like free healthcare and maternity leave etc along with their gas station and Walmart jobs. But as you have heard a million times they vote against their interests. Why? Because identity politics ties wanting healthcare into a bunch of assumptions about your character and general stances on things. It's a fucking weapon, one that prevents any of us from really getting what we want because it's always the other side's fault. Not just the government's fault it doesn't just give us this fucking stuff without letting these matters get locked behind identity politics checks. The two part system is designed for control to let you vent that it is somehow not the fault of both sides for some things like all the financial corruption and this have/have nots meta we live in.

You can have it at the county level if you want. It's basically how it's funded here, although government subsidies counties if they're under the budget. But to some extent you can have it at county or even state level if people vote for it.

The UK does not provide free universities (college)
It's currently £9,250 a year in tuition alone, then the government forces you to take out further loans to cover accommodation costs.
And because you pay the loans back as a tax, this means I'm effectively paying 40% tax on £17/h
Total disincentive to earn more money, and the best part? The interest is tied to inflation, so after ten years of payments, I owe more than when I started.....

And the "universal healthcare" is total dogshit here as well, you wait years to be seen, because that's the only way to ration it is with waiting lists.

USA is more socialist than nordics. Minimum wage = wage controls = communism.
