Herzl was based, though. You should read the book, he outright states that full assimilation of jews into european society and the complete erasure of jewish identity would be the ideaI, but that jews would never allow it to happen. If his version os zionism had won, the jewish question wouldnt had been an issue through the 20th century. But his ideas were never really popular, only appealing to niche progressive and europhile jews.
Who kickstarted modern zionism was Zeev Jabotinsky, who was more ideologically in line with most jews at the time.
