There is a lot, there is a lot. A lot of us.

A lot is singular so we use is. Just like circle is a singular noun. We don't say there are a circle of us now, we say there is a circle of us now.

Correct: There is a package of pencils.

We're referring to the singular package rather than the multitude of pencils. Similarly in "there is a lot of us" we're referring to the singular "lot" rather than the multitude of "us."

Much more commonly, a lot = many.

Examples:
There are a lot of people here.
There are a lot of us now.

Claiming to be referring to the singular "lot" is an easy way out, but the truth is that English speakers are far more accustomed to the usage I described. This is why it reads better this way, and why conversations like this wouldn’t even happen if it had been written that way.
