The idea of imprisoning people is an artefact of protestant Christianity. The first person ever sentenced to prison was in 1774. Before then prison was a holding cell for awaiting punishment.

It's a protestant christian, the idea is that prison allows you time to repent to God and reform yourself into a moral person. Ministers were active there everyday changing the prisoners.
As American society gets less protestant Christian, expect the system to revert back to execution as punishment for murder.
