Immigration is supposed to be used to address labor shortages. Thats not what we are doing though.

For example we dont have enough nurses and the ones we do have typically move to larger hospitals in larger cities that have better infrastructure leaving a deficit in rural and suburban communities so we should and do give out visas for nurses who already have inflated pay for their career field because of the shortage. My wife makes 100k+ a year doing this. If you start paying nurses the same as doctors you run into the issue of med students bailing out to shorter nursing programs and create a shortage of doctors ironically which are harder to source and the wage inflation scales higher if that occurs. The work and schedule is just shitty, requires a four year degree, and inflated wages have failed to address the issue due to the working conditions.

Thats not the extent of what our immigration is doing. It is flooding the market with cheap entry level labor and retail labor which is what the average American depends on and which we do not have a shortage of. This has stagnated wages across the board and serves only to further entrench the wealthy and corporations at large. It crushes upward mobility, quality of life, and has further reaching impacts on the housing market. It increases demand for starter homes and many immigrants will move their entire family into a medium or large home further driving up the prices on new homes while boomers are able to hire cheap illegal labor to maintain them further disincentivizing them from selling and downsizing as they retire.

Why is this really done? Property taxes. Every metro area depends on jacking up housing values by increasing the volume of aspiring purchasers not by improving the city itself but by flooding the market with buyers. They are able to issue bonds based on projected property tax revenue and use this to fund their pet projects that most constituents will never vote to pay for.

It's not a problem that needs fixing. You will have a larger fraction of the population being retirees, and that costs money, but you will also have a smaller fraction of the population being children and youth, which cost just as much, if not more, money.
