I've always wondered about this as well and I believe it was a combination of extreme programming from birth and a part of the brain that feels empathy. I've actually wondered about this.
I have the ability to 'read' people almost instantly in ways that others don't seem to be able to. I can 'feel' thought patterns and intentions, and it allows me to predict behavior.

Some people are completely blank to me though; even people I've known for years. My brother in law and a good friend from high school have always been unreadable. I get nothing from them.

The 'reading' might be just intuitively reading body and behavioral cues, but I wonder if it's not something more.
