Afghanistan used to be a net food exporter. But as soon as the US took over, they started producing 93% of the world’s heroin.

I went to Afghanistan to do a study on the heroin poppy crop. Nobody liked it. Someone reached out to me and said, “Hey, we heard you’re doing this study, and you might want to come out here. We can have lunch nearby.” I was like, okay.

So I got in my car and drove out to Timbuktu outside Washington, freaking far. There’s this secret DEA facility out there. Three of them took me out to lunch and said, “You’re in over your head. There are very powerful forces that want that poppy to be cultivated.”

I asked, “Why? It’s 93% of the world’s heroin.” They said, “Because almost all of that heroin goes to Iran and Russia, and we want them to be addicted to heroin. It weakens their societies.

Heroin is no longer relevant; even in russia, they switched all their old addicts to methadone. But yes, heroin was the only reason they occupied afghanistan for so long.
