well first of all, Jesus never once called Himself "king of the jews." He basically rejects this title in John 18:36.
Second, the jews wanted a messiah that validated their belief that their DNA made them better than everyone else, i.e. "the chosen people."
Jesus rebuked them for this and said that the true seed of Abraham, the true "chosen people" are Christians.
They wanted the messiah to remove the Romans. Instead, they witnessed Jesus bless a Roman centurion and say that many like him will be seated with the saints in Heaven.
