I only get you're hurt about me not liking the story of MGS 3 and 4. After MGS2 the bar was set too high. The discussions over the nature of the game, the significance, the AI, were simply too good. 3 and 4 had amazing gameplay, but zero things to add, just to milk further. Nanomachines were a thing since MGS1, were you couldn't use weapons or other stuff in certain areas with nuclear warheads, or Decoy Octopus impersonating people, dying from a vaccine in similar fashion, etc. 4 added nothing that wasn't done before it.

What are you talking about about. It was the worst one of the entire series. There were like two short ass actual levels, a dumb disguise bit, a boss fight with big robots, a super short ass final level and that was it. If you skip all the cutscenes it takes like 2 hrs start to finish. The ray vs rex fight was the only cool part of the entire game. Total waste.

1 & 2 had the advantage of not having the ending already set in stone. 3 being a backstory, the player already knows more or less overall what will happen, just not the finer details. Same can be said for 4, which is the last MGS story-wise. Honestly 3 and 4 pair well together. 3 beings the story of a philosophical cycle that trends beyond most coventinal means like nation or ideaology. and 4 concludes the end of the cycle, showing what a horrible thing it grew into.
3 touches on the myth of patriotism, and the (re)-construction of history and truth. Probably red-pilled some kids growing up on glow-ops.
4 was definetely a commentary on the existing and upcoming surveilance state and how shitty it is or will be.

I don't know how you fix the AAA studios. The only solution I see is letting them fail, which is neither easy or guranteed. I try to keep the hope that indie devs and small teams can pick up where old good companies left off. In my opinion, Kojima executed Big Boss' character poorly for a wall of text reasons that can be summarized in having around 5 games dedicated to Big Boss and still can't properly touch the psychological traits that had in MG1 and 2, like being deceptive, calculating, ruthless, jaded, Rambo tier veteran angry that the world uses and tosses soldiers, eternal war to validate their existence, etc. As for the setting in 4, it is hard to say since most of the missions are dealing with mercs trained by memes, so in a sense, that's accurate, but on the other side, we couldn't even see the effect on the common folk, just that there was ineffective but present resistance, and that robots with killer guns and tons of soldiers were ready to deploy in urban areas. My explanation is that Kojima was simply uninspired in the story department, and more invested in the gameplay and technical aspects, which were truly enjoyable.

1 and 2 really do scratch an itch that the others didn't. A finer nuance even.
The big boss storyline is just a really good rise to fame, become disslusioned, fall from grace story.
Metal gear is one of the few series that while I can find minor complaints about, but there isnt anything that absolutely destroys the series for me. I can't say that for many games that have had installments in the last decade and a half.
I don't see Kojima as based or a genius director or anything. Just the series is so obsurd and well done in places that I really enjoy it.
