That seems like classic denial to me. He didn't couch his objections in religious terms, even though he is Catholic. When you put this together with him saying sex with women is gay, spending time with a cat boy, and giving the lamest excuse for projecting gay porn onto his screen, I think there is definitely a chance he is still very much in the closet and Catholicism is just window-dressing to conceal an inner turmoil.
Another thing I noticed is the recent Red Scare appearance was his behaviour
I mean, and then you have his favourite film being La La Land and him mentioning Ryan Gosling first before mentioning Emma Stone.
