Sadly is easy to be organized in a game where you can make endless storage and own all the land and resources you can harvest.
If I could actually keep all the fruits of my labor I would be extremely motivated to work more in real life.

I didn't. Good games are still enjoyable, and as long as I took care of everything that needs to be done, there is zero reason for me to not just do something I enjoy afterwards.
I have more than enough money to cover all necessities, and also enough money to cover all the reasonable luxuries. If I decided to sacrifice my hobbies and slave away even harder, it would be because someone else wants me to pay for their unreasonable luxuries. Why would I do that?

>easy to be organized in videogames

It's simple effort in > reward out
Doing things in videogames feels rewarding, it's designed to feel rewarding.
And the better and more organized you are at the videogame, the more it rewards you.

But in real life, there is virtually no reward for your actions, you are forced to work anymore because you'll die if you don't, but you are not rewarded, you are merely punished for not doing so.
What rewards you do recieve in real life and seemingly random and often trivial.
From both a biological and societal point of view, there's no reason to enjoy living right now

There are good games that are enjoyable, and bad games which are not enjoyable.

If life was a videogame, I would have taken the disc out and quit playing years ago.
All talk of "seeing a beautiful natural landscape makes all the hardship worth it" is just cope.
From the metric of a videogame, ie from the metric of something enjoyable and worth willingly spending your time on, life is not it.

I’m 30 years old. I’ve been employed but never had a real job. Been a NEET or in college most of my adult life. I’ve lost interest in playing most games even though I like the idea of gaming a lot. The constant prompting in Civilization IV keeps me busy and is one of the only things that will distract me from depressive episodes, whereas in a game like Factorio or Minecraft I just end up as disorganized and directionless as I am in real life. I know Civilization IV will be one of my deathbed regrets (I have easily 3,000 hours on it, probably more), but even if I had the money and rig for newer games I feel like they just wouldn’t hold my attention.

I find them very annoying. I want to fuck off from work as quickly as possible, I don't want to waste even more time after work in the office just to eat pizza.
if I want a pizza, I can just buy one myself. no amount of slop in the office is going to compensate for the fact that the government steals more than half of my money to give it to foreigners. plus the 10-20% inflation on my wealth every single year that they decided to throw on top of that since COVID

I worked security at a mall for a few months. There were baby strollers patrons could rent, and the machine gave out a $1 refund when they were returned. These guys (some of whom were cool but most of whom had serious socialization issues) told me they put that money towards a Christmas dinner. I just pocketed it the whole time I was there as I had no interest in spending any time with them outside of work.

By contrast when I worked at a family member’s office he would find an excuse to get high-quality overpriced food almost every month, sometimes twice, and we would all sit around talking for an hour instead of working. It was nice and helped me to connect to at least a few of my coworkers. The advantage smaller companies have over the larger ones is that they can be smarter with their discretionary spending because the principals are in direct control of it, whereas in a company if you let that kind of spending go on you’d have people abusing it in no time.

i think my dysthymia finally caught up to me in my old age.
i no longer find watching films or tv enjoyable.
i no longer find playing video games enjoyable now that i understand the basic mechanics of the gameplay loop skinner box.
going on youtube and getting caught in youtube reels feels like an addiction i want to escape by my desire for more information keeps me there.
its like that one portlandia skit about being stuck in a technology loop.
i put twitch streamers on in the backround, i don't play games I just silently lurk twitch streamers as they play the latest games.
I honestly dont see why people buy games any more. just watch other people play theses games.

honestly if you like playing games.
and still can appreciate it.
then i will forgive you if you have a job or a family etc, and use it as a bonding expierence and/or just a time waster to destress.
when i was working playing league of legends and masturbating to porn was the best way for me to destress, however it kept me inside on the weekends instead of hanging out with my friends.
but then again my friends just want to stay in their homes, drink and smoke and watch amnime.
cool for a bit. but I like to wander. and people here are too scared of getting stabbed or robbed.
they don't know that if you walk around in a posse and stay mindful and if you are dudes people wont fuck with you.
but whatevs.
anyways i digress.
other than time waster/bonding. dif you are 40 and playing games and aren't developing a video game or do some sort of artistic vision you are absolutley fucking up.

consider the effort in game you need to expend to "get organized" vs real life.
in game, you press buttons with your fingers and manipulate a keyboard and mouse or controller and those inputs translate to moving an avatar aounrd onscreen.
also consider perspective too.
the abililty to reload saves and a bunch of other things.
good news this whole uncomfortable feeling you are getting with videogames and the dissonscne you are getting with real life is the first step to change.
sure you may not have the stamina or real life resources to be organized IRL.
but this game has taught you the basics.
and you can kind of understand the philosophy behind getting organized.

the thing is games often have goals spelled out for you, with a clear way of acheiving them.
and anyone with a walkthrough can achieve these goals.
IRL isn't exactly that cut and dry.

around the time the pandemic started, ironically enough.

I worked in IT and business was real good during the pandemic. then around 2021-2022 there was a lull that allowed me to catch up on projects, then as stay at home orders lifted and RTW orders hit, things got even busier.

Sitting down to play games at any age over 30 is impossible if you have any form of responsibility. Free time only exists if someone else is sacrificing theirs. I have no parents anymore, I am the man of the house and have to maintain my home and the two women I live with who help maintain it as well. They have needs as well.

Most people I know who get preachy about video games spend hours everyday sitting in front of the TV dribbling. They aren't watching the classics of cinema or French art films either. I usually end up on the side of games because the unstated alternative is mindless TV (I personally don't watch much made after about 1994).

There is nothing wrong with good video games in moderation. There is a lot wrong with spending any time at all playing slop which is what being "a gamer" seems to be about as a lifestyle thing.

But there is nothing virtuous about reading books if your books are Tom Clancy and Dan Brown.

Media and probably hobbies in general have this character to them. Quality in moderation is fine, stay away from the slop end of things and don't use them as displacement activities from real life. I work hard, I do what I have to do, I see no problem with hobbies in that context.
