>be mighty german battleship
>gets hunted down and sunk in first two weeks at sea crippling german naval hopes
why were the germans so shortsighted?

If it wasn't for the Americans and their pby Catalina, the stupid brits would never have found it. The US committed a war crime as it had not yet declared war on Germany.

German surface raiders had the 2nd best K:D ratio in terms of tonnage 2nd only to german uboats.

I think german commerce raiders sunk at a 6:4 ratio. Subs sunk at a 5:1 ratio. U boats are very smol tonnage and pack a punch.

Most battleships were pathetic in naval combat, including the Pacific. Some British, Japanese, and American battleships had a few good engagements but really were mostly successful in shore bombardment like on D-Day and Pacific naval landings supporting marines.

could be worse
>Build heaviest and most powerfully armed battleships ever constructed
>Keep in port entire war for fear or being sunk
>Leave port once in desperation to fight a losing battle
>Fire guns once
>Sink

I wouldnt say they were pathetic. Just that they were being phased out. When the combat finally found them they performed well and were the deciding factor in their engagement.

Lets remember there are only 11 Naval Battles in WWII where battleships faced off and were within visual range of each other.

Yamato most likely sunk one of the US escort carriers with her guns.

Could be worse worse... you could be the Roma

>convert the 3rd Yamato hull into an aircraft carrier because the era of battleships is over
>It holds less planes than smaller American CVs
>send it out to sea unfinished
>4 torpedoes from a submarine sinks it 10 days later

But even American destroyers were beginning to dunk on battleships late war. Yeah I get it, they were relics of WW1.

Jap navy was pathetic second half the war. Words cannot express how bad America fucked them in the ass. Same with the Brits vs the Germans.

>But even American destroyers were beginning to dunk on battleships late war.

Im no so sure about this. Destroyers got shredded by BBs in the night action of Guadalcanal and Battle off Samar.

And battleships were usually faster than destroyers so could easily thread the needle of any torpedo spread.

It was planes and carriers that really made battleships obsolete.

>Jap navy was pathetic second half the war.

The japanese literally stopped trying after Guadalcanal. After the campaign the japanese would not risk or lose another heavy cruiser until Leyte Gulf. Which itself was effectively a suicide mission to give the Japanese combined fleet a dignified ending/death.

The japanese really gave up hope.

ahhh, that slavish devotion to duty and Master.
The
>Yamato
and the
>musashi
were sunk by 5 torpeoes or less each. The USN just kept pumping ordnance into them so they both got ridiculous hit counts. In reality, they are inferior warships and the USS North Carolina class could sort out both Yamatos with no radar for the USN, just 5 optical rangefinders of Willow Run quality.
