ITHACA, N.Y. — Rallies are a routine sight on the Ithaca Commons, but it’s seldom that those events feature flags celebrating President Donald Trump or other right-wing figures.

Nevertheless, a group of about 18 people waved Trump and American flags during rush hour Tuesday as part of an event honoring the life of right-wing podcaster and political organizer Charlie Kirk, who was shot and killed during an event in Utah last month.

Amid the Trump flags, Kirk’s portrait was displayed on a small easel surrounded by candles. Some at the event sported t-shirts with “Freedom” printed across the chest, a reference to Kirk’s outfit on the day of his death.

Kirk, a conservative Christian and Trump ally, had at times garnered criticism for espousing racist, homophobic and transphobic views.

Local conservative Christian activist Rocco Lucente said the event was a prayer vigil; before its extended recess, Congress designated Oct. 14 as a national day of remembrance for Kirk.

“It would have been Charlie Kirk’s 32nd birthday,” Lucente said. “We are just here to honor his life, here to honor his ministry and his commitment to Jesus.”

Passersby had mixed reactions: one driver circled the block several times, gleefully sounding his car horn in support each time he passed the group; others rolled down their car windows to more prominently show their disapproval.

Local law enforcement officials have reported a recent surge in politically motivated death threats against local leaders, including elected officials, leaders at Cornell University and the Ithaca City School District and Tompkins County employees. Recently, security guards were installed at the entrance of Tompkins County Legislature meetings.

Attendee Sarah Kane said that she hadn’t heard of Kirk prior to the shooting, but his death helped rekindle her Christian faith.

“Because of all the social media around [Kirk’s death], I started watching [some of his] videos and I was like, ‘Wow, this is really re-sparking my interest in the Lord and in my faith,’” Kane said. “It helped it make sense to me again.”

Asked about some of Kirk’s more incendiary views, Kane said she did not feel that the late podcaster had intended to spark hatred or violence, but was “vehemently trying to communicate his truth from the Bible.”

Kane said she saw Tuesday’s event as primarily a religious one and said she found it a bit hurtful and surprising to see some of the hate from passersby.

“I don’t have a whole lot of experience going to religious events and stuff like that,” Kane said. “Like I said, I’m kind of a new Christian, so I was pretty excited to come to this and I’m just really excited to see all the supporters. I was really surprised by that. Seeing all the hate is also kind of surprising. Although maybe it shouldn’t be.”

Most people I know don't think Kirk was a joke, they think evangelicals are batshit insane who have never read or studied the bible.

I just find it funny that the people who are shitting on charlie kirk getting murdered (a law abiding, traditional man with a loving wife and children) are the same people who cried and rioted and screeched their heads off over george floyd (a career criminal who robbed pregnant women at gun point, and was a drug addict addicted to fent) overdosing on fent and dying.
