its not a fetish, its an preservance of culture. Old german buildings here usually just have a historical value and renovating them requires you to let the outside of building mostly in its original state, internally you can make it ultra modern, all in an effort to preserve the old look of the city/town.

I get that angle but shouldn't it evolve rather than get permanently stuck in such a state? Germany has the benefit of having far more expensive architecture that conveys its value, but a lot of smaller towns and main cities in other European countries just look old and shabby.

Commieblocks concrete blocks require more technology to build. Flat roofs and wide windows needs more steel reinforcement, the older buildings rely more on pure compressive forces, have thicker walls at the bottom floor, narrower windows because any window is weakness of the walls.

This is Lublin's historical Old Town. Its a quite small but well preserved section of the city. Used to be occupied by the ghetto but they kicked them out and restored this area as a cultural center of the city. Outside of this area, its modernized.
