Impressive feats of courage, competence and every other virtue still happen. Some even on the order of traditional heroism. It's just that the modern context renders such feats almost meaningless. A hero accomplishes great feats on behalf of something greater than himself. What is there today, to accomplish great things in the name of? Anything of note gets subsumed by a cynical and mundane evil.

The current establishment demonizes the traits required for heroism. They do this to prevent us from becoming competition for them.
