I'm in grad school right now and I've run plenty of AI examples through the academic version of Turnitin. I can assure you that even the paid AI detection models are pretty much worthless and not at all reliable. Turnitin specifically breaks down the paper into sentence blocks and gives each a probability rating of how likely it was AI written and, unless it is a blatantly obvious rip straight from Chat GPT, it'll probably miss it.
I've seen some of the papers my classmates have turned in which were actually straight lifts from Chat GPT that slid through with single digit probabilities. You cannot rely on any sort of detection methods for AI.
