Are generational labels completely made up by the media and not based on any social science?

consider that Douglas COupland named HIS generation "Gen X" in his novel Generation X.
It's about him and his peers.
He was born in 1961.

--flash forward --

media now claims Gen X starts in 1965
even though Coupland said 1960

Zoomers, too: Gen Z starts in 1995, or 1996, or 1997, they say.
But Zoomers born before 2003 are very different than the rest of the younger Zoomers ---- and identical to Millennials (I work with them all, trust me)

the actual generational divide is around computers and their prevalence in the learning environment
boomers - no computers
gen X - computer lab in school
millennial - shared computer in classroom
gen Z - personal computer issued
