I don't think it's still a thing in modern India. Infact they've got their own DEI thing where certain jobs are reserved for castes that traditionally faced discrimination to make up for the centuries of inequality. It's determined by birth. No seriously. Whatever caste you're born into, that's your caste. Whatever you did in your previous life is what places you in the caste hierarchy. So if you're born a dalit, an untouchable, you clearly were very evil in your past lives and you deserve to be shit upon and beaten. If you're born a brahmin, you were very virtuous in your previous life and therefore deserve to feel superior and all the material wealth you were born with.

In England, the class system was quite rigid but there was the chance rising in rank for exceptional individuals. Soldiers, merchants and artists were often ennobled and given land as a recognition of their achievements.

You know how all the tech CEOs and doctors became Indian? It's just that but as a country, they prevent others from getting high paying positions by helping their own and keeping others out. You can read retarded British scholars trying to put it on race, religion, or profession. It's none of those and all of those at the same time. Whenever and wherever they make it they bring along those who are like them in race, religion, or profession. It's not much different than other places in a sense, what makes it different and hyper focused in India is that they have so many boxes to pick from. In the US you can discriminate someone for their race but at least you all speak the same language. In Japan you can discriminate because of gender but at least you all look Japanese. India has a more "robust" caste system for a lack of a better word. It's like every place in the world has a "soft" caste system and India has a "hard" caste system.
