Not innovating cars is unironically the smarter move in the long run. VWs nowadays are massively overpriced and over engineered. Most people just want to move comfortable from A to B but modern cars (especially German ones) are stuffed with useless garbage that increases the price and makes it more expensive to maintain. German car manufacturing peaked with the Golf IV

Premium for repairs is what you mean. Can the headlight light bulbs on your car even be changed at home or do you have to send the to a Audi certified repair shop and pay 2000 euro for 2 light bulbs that should cost 2 euro each?

Even if you can change the light bulbs yourself I bet you can't fix 90% of the things you should be able to fix yourself.

It's not about being poor.

When I was young, on a Sunday morning many blokes would be under their bonnet, cleaning their points and doing minor repairs . .. .can you do that now?
NO
You have to take it to a dealer and it costs loads of money to fix a simple issue.

Modern cars are great with all their bells and whistles but I think there is something to be said for a simple car that you can repair yourself and you have a connection to it.

That is also true.

But also remember that in the 70s there wasn't so much finance thrown at you. You either had to buy it cash or approach the bank for a loan.

Now every Tom, Dick and harry can get the latest model for £1200 per month, that's why there are far more cars on the road now, than then.

Cars don’t have headlight bulbs anymore, Sven. The chance that your headlight will ever die or need to be replaced is unlikely. You may still have bulbs in your highbeams, but with how infrequently those are used you are unlikely to need to change them also and they are also non-critical items.

Honestly, i think it was the jap cars that got introduced into the US market in the late70's and 80's. I grew up then and it wasn't uncommon to see American car stules and bodies last for years and years basically unchained. Sure some cosmetic changes here and there, maybe a bit smaller or larger but basically still the same car. Then the Jap stuff hit and i remember reading that they had this philosophy that they had to change styles like every 4 years or something. So we got inundated with cars coming in that were always changing. The magazines and auto press did not help, constantly saying "Jap is better then American!" So we followed suit imo.

It’s a form of planned obsolescence. American car manufacturers caught onto that early on.., by the 1950’s cars were reliable enough where they could last a decade before a driver had to buy anew. Well that was a disaster for the auto industry which needed to sell lots of new cars every year. So they got wise and started issuing new colors every year and modifying the body, that way in a few years even if your car was perfectly good it was no longer the newest greatest thing. In fact it looked downright dated, so consumers were psychologically manipulated into trading in.

The increased complexity due to improving emissions standards and fuel efficiency are understandable. It’s everything else that’s the problem… simple analog meters on the dash are perfectly fine, but nowadays you basically have a computer, and something always goes wrong with computers, especially when they are put into hot sun exposed dashes with continuous movement, and then what, you’re SOL. You may be stranded somewhere because of it. Then manufacturers play games by introducing special bolts or parts that require proprietary tools to replace to try to force consumers to go to the dealer for routine shit. That’s what pisses people off.

At the end of the day it’s in the manufacturers interest to keep you and I continually buying their crappy products and tied to a subscription. It’s like that with everything. Why build a washing machine that’ll run for twenty years and simple to fix? Much better to sell cheap products with a one year warranty, or whatever warranty, so long as the thing breaks down right after the warranty is up. I find it amusing that you go to Wallyworld and see the latest greatest vacuum machine that you know is just absolute shit that will break after a year or two and require a service center to fix. Meanwhile you look at what the hospitality crew is using at your local hotel and it’s a commercial grade Oreck or similar machine that is made with heavy duty parts and is dead simple to fix. About the only thing that fails on them are the belts which are a couple of bucks to replace and no service tech needed. Or how about accounting software… Yep, they want you to have a subscription and use their online web based product. Same with cars. Sure newer cars are way better in many ways than the old jalopies, but they are plagued by the same MBA mindset that is about keeping you dependent on them, not about simplicity and durability. If you want that you might not do so bad with one of those Russian vans.

Western cars changed for 2 reasons:
1. The solid square frame was removed to save weight, so the car can be made abroad and shipped to the west - the frame IS the body.
2. Due to safety features and crumple zones and requirement to bear entire load of car when flipped over, geometry also changed.

This but it is not only age but quality.
I own an old BMW 5 series. The other day I had the opportunity to drive a like 15 years newer Volvo and was kinda happy, like yeah, cool, new car, good car maker, this will be great... and fucking hell, what a difference. That Volvo being way newer felt like a tiny, scrawny shitbox. I mean it was ok to drive, never felt dangerous or what ever, but after changing back to the BMW and only driving a few meters you instantly felt like you are in a way better built, more solid, more... real car. The engine noise (basically not there with a smooth 6 cylinder), the steering feel, the seating position, the pedals... everything felt so, so much better. And that was compared to a Volvo. Volvos are not bad cars. I really don't want to experience a rice cooker or US car...

saw one driving in front of me and started smoking hard, white smoke. Driver stopped, I went to check if he needs help, said the car is 3 months old.

I think peak was golf 2. Add servo and abs to Golf 2.

Nah, UAZ shit, it's just shit. It was designed as a disposable vehicle for the military back in 50s, it simply cannot be not shit. It's willys mb without advantages and simplicity of willys mb. Modern UAZ is even shittier, the quality is so poor it has no warranty, at least here in Belarus. And it's surprisingly expensive both to buy and to maintain.

I'm not trying to scare you, I hope it serves you well, but I don't think when it comes to reliability you can't top golf 2. It wasn't yet over enginered and filled with chips and electronics and engine was reliable as fuck.

Didn't even look bad either, didn't rust. If it was sold today with just abs, electronic stability and servo added I would buy it the same moment, no questions asked. Even if it had just servo and abs, fuck it maybe even with just abs lol.

>Patriot is Latin.

Most patriotic Russians live outside of Russia, in the West.

So it's not a mistake that it's written in Latin.

My mate at work just had the light bulbs replaced on his caddy.
The shop unscrewed the plastic front bumper and the headlights so they could take them out and replace the bulbs.
I assume replacing the bulbs on a Buhanka doesn't feature as many steps.
