Because they're spoiled by modern convenience. Nothing in their life is a struggle anymore because they don't have to hunt or forage for their food, fix tools to live or repair their shack's roof to have a dry place to sleep or gather firewood to have a warm hearth to sit around. They crave struggle so they make it for themselves by overcomplicating their relationship to their own fucking bodies.

One of the core tenets of their ideology is the blank slate. They demand that everyone be infinitely malleable to social engineering. If they aren't, then their belief system falls apart.
