I live in what used to be cattle country and all I want to do is be a cowboy, but I can't fucking do it. US beef production has stagnated. Ranch land has soared in value to the point where all these retiring cattle operations are just sold off by the children of ranchers to billionaires who hold the land as a liquid asset and pay someone to cut hay once a year for the Ag subsidy. Ranching is impossible to turn a profit if you're paying a mortgage, banks won't even issue you a line of credit if you didn't already have a standing line.
