To be fair thats exactly the kind of shit that incentivizes botting/cheating. Still kinda of a dick move to those who actually invested money into it but its not like the game is made for that purpose to begin with lol.

How do? People could buy something real with their money, or they trade that money for something fake. The person who sold the fake thing then buys something real... or another fake thing. Either way the net effect is zero. Consumption of real goods stays the same.
It's certainly harmful for the individuals that get sucked into it, but society wide it's pretty much irrelevant.
The cause of the problems is excessive money printing. Asset inflation is just a symptom.

Honestly this seems like a possible ritual and front running of an actual crash of comparably speculative assets in a phase of mania. On the computer game, the company lets you use fancy pixel skins to look cooler. The company lets you trade those fancy pixel skins to other people. This allowed a black market of sorts to form where people would pay """real""" money for pixel skins (because all fiat is fake and gay just less fake and gay than fancy pixel skins)

Browns and other subhumans liked to use these fancy pixel skins as a vehicle for speculation. Buy low, sell high, make money. Except in the world of speculation, especially when the thing you're speculating over is literally just a bunch of fancy pixel skins subject entirely to the whims of the parent company who doesn't care about the retards buying and selling them for thousands of dollars, this is basically little more than gambling.

The parent company made some changes that make it easier to get the fancy pixel skins, devaluing the limited supply of them due to simple economic laws of supply and demand. Make something more common, it is intrinsically worth less, simple as.

The gamblers lost bigly.

It's a situation even more stupid than the tulip crash because at least there wasn't a singular company out there that would wave a wand and 5x the number of tulip seeds in circulation. But yes, browns and retards literally invested in an asset that could be duplicated without warning by the parent company.

Then they duplicated them and the browns got duped.

What I don't understand is why steam would want to tank the value of items

Now I haven't used the steam marketplace in a decades when I did I would sell my loot crates for 0.03 and of that 3 cents I got to keep 1c and valve pocketed the other two

So for every sale valve was pocketing some of the money

Or are they actually just trading the items to each other for "free" and doing the actual monetary exchange somewhere else?

Should have bought Pokemon cards. The only way older cards lose value is if Creatures does reprints and each pack is nothing but full arts. But even then, the older ones will still be distinct.

they go out of circulation or their drop rates are reduced in favor of new cases and collections. one of the most expensive collections was a collection from an operation, can't remember which one, but it's the norse collection and even shit skins from that collection are worth ten or more dollars. I guess I should say 'were worth'.

they probably won't, but it's not a terrible idea to cash out. In reality they might go up in value, but valve could just make them disappear next update and say no more cases or turn them all into the shitty new terminal.

So basically in 2017 Bitcoin was BIG among millennials and then it CRASHED, ruining the lives of many 30~yo boomer millionaires.

Fast forward 8 years to 2025, gen z is too late to get in early on bitcoin. But look- CSGO skins have exploded in value! Zoomers brag about having 800,000 dollars in rare stickers and that they're HODLing until they have 8 million dollars. Basically Skins became to zoomers in 2025 what Crypto was for millennials in 2017.

Then valve comes in and crashes it.

Incidentally both Bitcoin and the Skins market were pumped by Chinese people.

If the Armory update last year is any indication, Valve has no idea how the skins economy in Counterstrike actually worked. And this time, instead of making a bunch of skins that just didn't become all that valuable, they destroyed the value of the pre-existing skins. They didn't mean to blow off both of their feet; but they did anyway.

I think on the low end i have around $700 worth of cases plus other accounts I haven't logged into in forever with god knows how many cases on them I'll just cash them out ASAP and get a free steam deck since my computer is too old to play any modern games anyway, that's kind of a nice reward for just not paying attention to a game I used go play a lot in college

I still think the crash is an overreaction. reds are ~2.5 times more common than knives, so if each case nets a slightly higher knife rate of what, 1.5 times the old value which is 0.39% and up from 0.26% (due to enhanced rate from trade ups) you'd see maybe a few percentage points of drop, not this 50% freakout. There will be a glut of new knives hitting the market right now, but so long as the playerbase doesn't decrease and the real economy stays somewhat healthy, the market will bounce back slowly. shit knives will fall off hard and probably never recover, but things like gems and butterfly knives will very likely come back, and reds will be worth substantially more money, likely leading to a higher expected return from case openings. But who really knows.
