I'm an older millennial and all millennials report the same thing: absolute neglect and indifference by our Boomer parents. How did they just let us at age 7 and 8 roam around entire towns and forests and rivers and play on railroad tracks with no way to know where we were or what we were doing? I have a GPS tracker watch phone on my kid and I still can barely bring myself to let him ride his bike around our neighborhood unsupervised. Did Boomers just literally not care about their kids at all?

I wish I could ask the Boomers what the fuck they were thinking but they're all too brain damaged to answer at this point.

Everything I know I had to learn myself. My dad never taught me how to do anything, not even simple things like how to start a lawnmower or change my car's wiper blades. I had to learn how to be a man by myself and I'm definitely worse off for it.

The simple truth is this: a high trust society permits peace and adventure. Fellas. I have 4 kids and I love them more than my own life. Every time they fall and get hurt I blame myself. My oldest son was jumped by a dog and I've never forgiven myself. He did nothing wrong, *I* fucked up by allowing that situation to occur. I keep them in activities and they're all fit but I can't just let them go get hurt just because I wanna do whatever (mostly bang my wife). How could you live with yourself if you sent your kid off unsupervised and they got splattered by a big truck or drowned or whatever?
When they're old enough and I'm confident they are ready I'll let them do more stuff...you can learn to take the subway by yourself just as well at 20 as you can at 6.

Yes, they did not give a shit. Boomers grew up in a time when success was a guarantee. It didn’t matter what their parents did or how involved they were; Boomers would end up with at least a solid middle class lifestyle as adults. All their parents had to do was make sure they did t starve to death or end up in prison.

Times have changed. Really, they’ve just reverted back to normalcy, where failure is a possibility of children aren’t actually raised by their parents.

How many people do you know that were encouraged by their parents to do something other than sports in their developmental years? The best you could hope for is Bot Scouts, which varies drastically from troop to troop (most are absolutely horrible and lame), or music lessons (which is exceedingly rare and generally expensive).

Music is the one that really got me. The “absentee/nonchalant parent” thing is something I started noticing in high school. That’s before the internet existed. Of all the kids I knew who were in the band, none (that is, a total of zero) received any kind of outside lessons. No, you can’t just teach yourself, unless you’re some kind of exceptionally gifted prodigy.
