>Hershey's chocolate
Growing up in little bumfuck nowhere New Zealand we were exposed to a lot of American culture through movies, music, and literature.
Then there was also the whole Space shuttles thing, all the American inventions, the idea that America had saved the world from Nazis and was fighting evil communism. Saviors of the the Western world. We lapped it up. No really. It was our reality.
Goddamn the Americans were clever, decent down to earth, no bullshit dudes who had "doing the right thing" encoded into their genetics.
I hate to admit it now, but it worked. For most of us that was the perception.
The image we received, and willingly consumed, was this ultra advanced, morally uplifting, "can do" nation enshrining ideals of justice, equality, and quality.
Everything from America was good. Everything there must be the best. It made sense. America was biggest and best.
Many products we saw in American comics, cartoons, and TV shows were unavailable here at the time I was growing up. We looked upon American teenagers consuming American products with envious eyes. Fuck yeah.
Wow, those Hershey bars must be delicious. Of course they must be the best. They are American. They only have the best. A Hersey bar would make our own domestic brands of chocolate look like utter shit.
Many years later I traveled to the USA. One of the first things I did upon arriving in Los Angeles was to find a shop and AT LONG FUCKING LAST HAVE ONE OF THOSE GODDAMNED DELICIOUS BEST IN THE WHOLE FUCKING WORLD ALL AMERICAN HERSHEY BARS!
Fuck yeah! Here it comes! Oh boy!
Holy fuck this shit is crap!
You can imagine my surprise. It was culture shock. It destroyed the images of my youth. I walked away, wiser, but somehow feeling deeply betrayed.
But despite this I loved America. Away from the cities I found decent upstanding people sharing resonate values I could wholly relate to. Goddamn, I loved the place.
