Most people are automaton drones that do things because it's what everyone else does. My parents got married and their parents got married so I'm going to get married- that kind of thing. But you see marriage rates going down with millenials so it's going to become much more acceptable not to get married. Marriage rates are going to decline fast, they already are. Marriage is a legally binding contract between the couple and the government (with unclear terms and a lot of potentially bad outcomes) that severely limits your ability to jump ship when things go south, which gives the woman a lot of power in practice--when she knows you can dump her when she stops keeping up her end of the bargain, she has a greater incentive to be on her best behavior. The only caveat to this is if you have kids. Kids need a stable two parent household in order to thrive and marriage helps keep couples together instead of acting on whims or bailing during rough periods.
