I think what is happening to the west right now is just a classical behavioral sink.

They stop thinking about the traditions of their society and why they were important enough to come into existence originally. They stop thinking about how much debt they're in and how they're going to pay it off later. They stop thinking about protecting their borders and what will happen if they stop.
They stop worrying about problems on the horizon; they just figure we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

As people get content and comfortable, they lose the hunger to plant trees the shade of which they will never know.
I'm sure there are people working to further this trend behind the scenes, but I really believe their influence is limited in scope, and that the collective is really to blame for it.
