When some russians are proud of USSR or Russian Empire they are proud of their Fatherland, it's glorious victories, remarkable achievements, tragic and rich history. Ideology, be it monarchy or socialism doesn't mean shit, but ancestors deeds in historical continuity of russian history do. As it's people who make states and history, with their own hands. And it's used as a reminder and reference of what russians as people can achieve, just like their ancestors, under right direction and leadership and should strife for. USSR was cool in eyes of these people not because it was socialist, that's secondary, but because it was powerful and this power was achieved by russian people own hands, labor and effort.
