Economics. For most of history, a woman needed a man with an income to provide for her. Sure, women did do a lot of work (most of it domestic, some of it commercial) but it was typically low value, I mean just look at it today, they don't do much valuable work, jewish daycare and all that. If she wanted a comfortable life she needed a hard-working skilled man who had a good income.

Today women are just given jobs mandated by law through gender quotas and these days simply through institutional bias, and if they can't get those jobs they get lots of welfare programs paid for by the working men who, in the past, they would have had to marry to get access to their resources, but now the state just steals their resources and gives them to women. So they have no need to partner up.
