4chan is anonymous and without a user identity making it a ripe target for takeover. All that was needed was a shitload of cash and no scruples about covertly paying for propaganda. The timeline was thus: In 2009 moot was voted unto No.1 of the Time Magazines online poll of the world's most influential people. The "Rageguy" versions of various 4chan memes had been prepared in advance and were now carefully dished out in threads kept at the top of the 4chan frontpage (this was before the days of Catalog) by an IRC coordinated team of operatives (this was before the days of Discord).

There is far more subtlety and nuance in the simple thing than there is in the complex. Complexity means brute force application.
