"90s low effort liberalism".

This enraging today to both woke left and woke right (do what you want so long as you don't involve me, your business is your business, don't make it my business).

Perhaps it was a backlash to the AIDS panic when governments suddenly decided snooping on your bedroom and in your underpants was their job. But as a result we thought we were post-everything and would never have to go back to dealing with that shit (post-feminist, post-racial, etc). Complete opposite of identity politics, it was all about individuals and, to borrow a phrase, the content of their character.

Either way, it was certainly a better and easier way to live I think. I realise in 2025 this sounds bizarre.

shit man just being able to smile sincerely and fostering a strong hope for a prosperous future. There was hope back then.

Today's world is what I imagine hell to be like. Reliving the same day of your life over and over, blissfully unaware of the soul-rotting existence life has become until you wake up one day and look in a mirror, each gray hair a testament to how much life you wasted chasing a delusion. A fantasy.

The Community. The sense that people were connected. Family had more friends, and more people you would meet and interact with on a weekly to monthly basis, more sense of everything being alive. Being social didn't feel awkward, it felt vital. Neighborhoods were full of people you might meet and talk to. Blockbusters, theaters, book stores, restaurants, parks, shops were places you might meet and talk to people. Media was secondary to our lives, we didn't rely on it solely for culture. Culture was something people created organically by sharing time with each other, not something created by marketing, networks, and tech.

it felt like a time where most people just minded their own business, and laughed at anyone who didn't. Tipper Gore's crusade, Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinsky, and linking columbine to Maralyn Manson and video games were a thing, but they were largely laughed at and dismissed as unserious by most of the population. Serious concerns were remote, with USSR gone biggest military conflicts were dealing with Bosnia and kicking the shit out of Iraq, with no desire to try to remake societies in our own image at the barrel of a gun. Nothing like the great financial crisis, or vestiges of it, affecting everyday people going on decades.

I miss when I used to go with my mother to the Christmas parties they would have in the towers. Everyone brought their kids and there was all kinds of food and events like face painting at the parties. I vividly remember being high up in the tower and looking down on the NY streets to see all of the people and vehicles going about their day. From where I was it looked like a bunch of ants. I remember going into building 5 with her and I was able to use this new website called Google, wandering everyone's cubicles and making all kinds of cool new friends.
Even knowing what I know now, looking back, life was much better without cell phones and things like online gaming. Pre 9/11 new York was the place to be. Food was cheap, people had brains, life was good. I'll never forget unlike many. I hope the entire middle east burns in nuclear fire.

Being disconnected 90% of the time.
I had the internet in patchy intervals prior to 2005 or so. I really hate how much it has changed my life. In some ways it's quite nice though, since I get to work from home. But I think it's a curse in disguise since I am now basically contactless with anyone but my wife and kids.
It was nice when the kids were wee toddlers and I was here to be with them as they grew. Now they are both in school, and we don't need as much bonding as we did when they were little.
You used to be able to get lost fully. Now they know where you are at every second of the day. Even if you tried to disappear, they'd just scan all the license plates until they found your route. Then they'd just follow your every step.
And that's assuming you don't have your phone broadcasting your every movement.
The world didn't used to have the training wheels on it. When you were out, you were out. Nobody knew you from Adam, authorities included. Now anonymity is dead and we live in a surveillance hellscape.
I miss seeing only white people.
I miss being bored with what's on TV and just going outside to pass the time.
I miss girls not having a cornucopia of 8/10 chads offering to pump and dump them. Meaning you weren't always competing against some dreamboat she can access with the swipe of her thumb.
I miss minor disagreements not turning into two people video recording each other.
I miss knowledge being something that took some effort to acquire. I was once that guy who kinda just knew things and I was respected for it. Now everyone binges little shows on youtube that takes all the information I used to gather and makes it into little bite sized chunks that everyone knows now. It's made everybody into annoying little 'experts'.
I miss having conversations without hearing some sound byte borrowed from reddit sprinkled into every other sentence.

I grew up in NY. I lived in an art studio when I was 7. Loved the vibe of being around young gen xers while they were riding the grunge wave. Seeing all the hole-in-the-wall skate shops. Listening to NIN on the radio. Eating chocolate chip cookies way past my bedtime while I play DK Country on the SNES. Being a young Millennial has been peak. I rolled trips on this existence. Be blessed, anons. The future is yours.
