All tabletop games are just games of pretend with some rules added to prevent everyone from just being God and making the game boring. And since it's not a competitive game, you can change the rules to suit the needs and wants of your friend group. Things like to rulebooks and modules are there to provide some creative suggestions, but there is no one to force you to use them as written. Take the GURPS pill, bros. It can be as simple or as complex as you like and it handles any genre, oftentimes better than games dedicated to a specific genre. The company sucks but the quality of the material is excellent, and its generic nature makes it way more resistant to being pozzed because it's not built on a single setting or a handful of settings that are all basically the same.

If you play d&d and aren't ignoring, changing, and adding rules to your liking, you don't understand the point of it. They can release premade adventures about sucking dragon dick in a dungeon, I don't care. I've literally never played a premade adventure longer than two sessions, I make my own world and stories and so do the others in my group who play. Also there's no point in buying any new editions because I've got the old ones which are better anyway.
