I'm sorry to hear that, anon. Dog is truly man's best friend. We had to euthanize our boy last year in July. I miss him every single day. We brought him home and buried him in the backyard.
I hope you gave your companion the best life possible. God bless you.

im a vet tech and i know i can't by law but man i want to tell so many owners every elective or emergency surgery is just prolonging suffering instead of putting it down
Ive had a doberman who basically cries every time they are brought in every 3 years or so because the owners pay for club foot sugery and it causes immense pain during and recovery
It's an uphill unwinnable genetic condition but they still pay for it

Had to put down one of my cats. He had a mysterious type of cancer that made it almost impossible for him to eat anything. He was like skin and bones just choking and wretching whenever he tried to eat; the post op said he had 2 types of extremely aggressive cancer in one of his salivary glans and it wrapped his thyroid. He's going to be in a medical journal.

We took him to the vet and I held him until he was gone. Their eyes dont close when they're sedated and I watched until his heart stopped and he left. I never really liked him, he was my wife's cat and like he was personable and nice, but when he got sick he made a huge effort to be my friend. Started sleeping with me and hanging out all the time. Became my buddy. Near the end I was afraid he'd die sleeping with me in bed, and now I just miss him, even what was left.

It fucking sucked. Thought I could go back to work, just couldnt stop thinking about him. You'll be okay anon. Your dog is better off, good job making the hard choices so he didnt have to suffer.

my dog is going through some trouble too, im with u bro. By the looks of it kidney failure. I will really miss her, she’s still here now so I cuddle with her as much as possible, but she is very old and have lost fuction in the backlegs and have trouble going to the toilet, pees alot and leaves a black stain, thats why i think it kidney failure, going to the vet soon, and you know, shes 11 years which is like 60-70 human years. Anyways, I understand how you feel. I myself believe i will meet my pets again, either in heaven or having some other life, maybe being another animal or something who knows, makes me feel better, hope it makes you feel better too

It takes a few seconds for the heart to stop and consciousness to lapse. Brain death takes a few minutes. You should stay with them longer. Inside on some level the lights are still on even as you can feel them become noticeably colder as blood flow stops.

It is extremely hard because animals can't speak directly of their pain and also tend to hide it, but you did the best and most humane thing possible by ending its suffering, something humans should be able to do instead of endless prolonging pain till the inevitble.
My cat died from a cancer caused by rabies vaccine, had terrible lung cancer and bone growing out of his paws. We had no idea because he was very dog like, always eager to please, and hid it until his quality of life dropped off. zand evrn then, he didn't wanna go, perked up again after bringing him home with the diagnosis. It sucked. But when we put him to sleep, he put his paw on my hand, then rested his head down on it, as if telling me he was ready. Broke my heart.

Sorry for your loss anon I lost my dog last year. Thankfully the good memories outshine those last moments which were very sad. One of my favorite memories was taking my doggie to a baseball field to let her off the leash and run. She was very graceful doing laps. Then she shit on field like a good dog and that made me laugh thinking some player might step in it later.

Sorry for your loss anon.

I have a story about two dogs that might be uplifting.

My sister’s family lost a loved dog during Covid and my niece (12) was not doing too well due to the lockdowns, etc. They wanted to get another dog but couldn’t find one due to a shortage during the Covid lock downs.

Context:
My friend has hunting property up in the mountains. The year before this story takes place, we were camping up there and came across a pack (~15) of dogs that were dirty and starving. Turns out the next door property owner (80 acres) had died of a heart attack and his dogs were left to fend for themselves. We fed and watered them and put the story on Facebook. The local community and animal control took them in. This is good, because it snows in the mountains and the dogs would have had a difficult time surviving. Also mountain lions and bears.

The next year we were up there again way out in the forest and two dogs ran across the road in front of us and stopped. We stopped, and my friend opened the door of his pickup and the dogs jumped right into the truck. Both were dirty and starving. One was a white husky and the other was a smaller black Australian Shepard.

They were dogs from the previous year that had not been rescued and had survived in the wilderness through the winter. Not sure how they happened to run across the road in front of us, but maybe they remembered the truck from us feeding them the year before and chased us down.

We couldn’t leave them in the woods, and animal shelters were all closed for the day and we weren’t sure what to do with them. Happily, my sister wanted to take them in. It was a blessing for my niece. She loves the dogs, especially the husky. He’s just about the perfect dog with a great personality.

I believe that God sent the dogs to me to be rescued so that my niece could have comfort from her grief.

Some owners think more of their own grief than the pain the animals are in. It’s unfair to the animal when they hold on too long. A painless passing is kindness to the pet that has been your faithful companion for years.

Brother, I had to put mine down in August. I ugly cried like a bitch. He gave me 13 years of unwavering loyalty and he helped me build a life and a family. Even though I know they don't live long, still nothing really prepared me for the pain. I lost 10 pounds purely from grief alone. I hope you're fairing better than I did. I'm only just now getting to the point where I can look at his photos again.

I couldn't do what the vets do. Imagine having to be responsible for putting down peoples favorite family member multiple times a week. It's gotta be taxing on your spirit.

My Grandfather had great advice for when you find yourself stuck in your feelings. Put yourself into the selfless service of others. Focus all your energy into doing something helpful to those around you. It has helped me for years. Hope it helps you a little bit.

18 year old dog, age related kidney failure. We knew the day was near and 18 years is a fair life but seeing the decline happen in a matter of days hurts the most. One day everything was normal, 3 days later it's over. To be honest the decline was such that euthanasia was an easy choice and it was instant which actually didn't hurt and still doesn't to this day, but thinking about the day before when I witnessed the moment of collapse makes me want to cry.
I'm still glad that I got such a long time with my dog and it would be all well and good except for the fact that it gave me a taste of what's coming eventually with my parents, and friends and siblings if they pass before me. You can always find happiness and fun in life one way or another but death of a loved one is the one true terrible thing about it that comes sooner or later.

But it does gets better OP. The next few days are going to be terrible, yes, but soon enough you will remember the positives and laugh at the happy memories.

I let my dog go home a few months ago from cancer. I wanted to know what caused it and became a hypochondriac for a few weeks. I've really changed my perspectives on air quality because he had metastatic lung cancer. Eventually he began to bleed inside, I'm assuming from a tumor in his GI tract since they're was blood in his stool and got anemic. The doctor told me to not waste my money on trying to save him since it would just cause him more pain and suffering but by the time we got to the vet hospital I could tell he was barely holding on. He was 12 and I still miss him everyday since he was my best friend. I rescued him from a Mexican puppy mill at 4 months. I keep his leash and toy by the door still and it hurts a little everyday when I come home to an empty house after work. I have his ashes on the fireplace mantle so he's always at home with me like he used to be.

I hope it gets better for you

He died in my arms at the age of 16, the back door at my parents house still has a black stain on the bottom or the door where he used to lay against it, that was 25 years ago and I still think of him, we have him buried at mum and dads with a proper head stone. oh look we have a vegan

answer me this vegan:
If a lion/bear/wolf kills a pig/sheep/cow every day to eat would you kill that lion/bear/wolf ?

because a life of sheep/pig/cow isnt more valuable than the life of lion/bear/wolf

you vegan are also a hypocrite and you have double standards playing God and decide which animal lives(those who eat plants) and which animal dies(those who eat meat)

so in other words you cant talk when you have double standards yourself
