How do I stop collecting
Ever since lockdowns I stopped throwing away things, with inflating continuously increasing, jobs being terminated, and prices being out of control, I started to fear that anything I threw out today would cost 3X more if i needed it again.
How do I figure out what shit is ACTUALLY worth keeping? I already have food and ammo and shelter items in another room.

Literally everyone's grandparents who grew up during the depression, did this until they died. Then they left it to their children and grandchildren to sort through after their deaths.

Sort through it and find what you actually want to or think you should keep or not. Anything you dont have space for get rid of. This is a borderline hoarding issue.

The best way to deal with this that I've found is to do an O(n) (linear) search when you need anything, where n is the number of items you have - basically, just check every single thing and compare it to what you're looking for. It sucks, but I can't do any better. Help.

the middle shelf unit has different types of papers, pens, drawing untensils, rulers, glue, scissors, staplers, index cards
the other shelf has thread, buttons, sweing machines, pins, needles, fabric patches

I fall into the trap because I see stuff like that not as hoarding, but as a 'toolbox' the same way a box of wrenches and screwdrivers would be. I may only need it once a year, but having it is better than going to the store to buy a screwdriver for $10

The board games are being saved if me or my siblings have children, or ever buy their own home, there's enough down here to stock a new house with a decent amount of furnishings.

some of it just me thinking old=good, as alot of the tech in this house is pre-2000s, and id rather hold onto that machine from 1970 than buy a new one today that would break after 2 uses.

there would be less hoarders if getting rid of something was easy. you can't just dump half of that shit out in the street and expect garbage to pick it up, it's hard to rent a truck to take it to disposal site and pay money to dump your trash... so for most it's easier to just store in some corner instead

Recently I did a move, so I had to "un hoarding" my living space. My spare bedroom was approaching this level of hoarder-home.

I got rid of the whole lot. Some at the 2nd-hand store. Most of it thrown in a dumpster. I am really glad to have free space and to have a living space that actually looks nice for a change.

All that junk in the OP? Throw it in the dumpster and don't look back.

If you're not actively enjoying it, displaying it, etc you need to get rid of it.
I'm a collector too, and I've been listing all the stuff I have that doesn't give me the "warm and fuzzies" on ebay.
You need to look and every item and really think "what does this bring to my life?" There is stuff I keep in storage, but I do pull it out and enjoy and appreciate it. I try to display as much as I can of the items I enjoy seeing. I've gotten rid of so much shit and it feels great.
I collect militaria and been doing it for 25 years for context.

Remember that space and organization have value too.

Honestly it looks like your big pile of stuff is like 50% board games. Board games are literally worthless (which is why stores constantly sell them at an extreme discount). If things get bad, you definitely won't be desperate to find board games of all things. You can also remove the board games from their outer packaging or consolidate duplicates to conserve space. That space can be used to store more important things like more food and more ammo.

Also, those old PCs are also a waste of space. If there's any data you need off of them, take it out and have them recycled. Data and electronics don't have an infinite shelf life (i.e. they "expire") so don't even expect those to turn back on. If you want a reliable spare computer, buying something more modern is going to be a much better option.

Everything else can probably just fit on one of the small shelves. Some of it is definitely worth keeping (like that sewing machine) but some of it can probably just be used/disposed over time (like the stationery and stuff).

If you don't have an eye for what is actually valuable, you should stop collecting old junk you don't understand. It's like those retarded boomers that collect shitty cars from the prior century because he saw a nice one go at an auction for a lot of money one time.

What computer hardware did you throw away that ended up being valuable? Probably the only old PC hardware of any value to people is CRTs (some of which are pretty nice) and maybe old keyboards with old switches. However, pretty much all of the value in those goods has already been identified, so anything that you have that isn't one of those things is simply going to remain "junk" forever.

At the time, most of those computers you see in that pic were given to me for free, that period in the mid 00s when old computer tech was still pretty useless. to cut to the chase, the only two I still have today are the ones under that CRT, the power Mac and the packard bell. so i DID consolidate eventually,

i was told the powerbase 200 was a rare computer because it was a macintosh clone PC with hybrid windows ports on the motherboard.
not sure if its rare now but i found out it was back then.

Just because something is rare doesn't make it valuable. Push it off onto another hoarder/collector for like $50 and be done with it. It has no value to you other than what you can get in exchange, and now is basically the best time to sell shit, since people currently have more money than sense.

- Look up local buy nothing groups, mention the sewing supplies and make people visit your front door to grab them. Even better if it's a Facebook group of hobbyists to split the loot.

- Contact local schools or youth groups for the stationery supplies and board games. Be firm this is an one-time donation if they are a non-white group. Unless your family already accepts second hand gifts NOW, your future kids WILL NOT accept them either.

- Make a pile of books, DVDs and CDs for the local library. Keep classic literature and usable manuals if you plan on reading them this month.

- Most old tech is junk. Run any tags through eBay quick, and don't encourage dumpster diving in your area.

even 3 years ago digital point and shoot cameras were $5 for the whole kit at thrift stores before skyrocking to $100+ because zoomers rediscovered misd 2000s digital aesthetics
imaging what zoomers/alpha will suddenly 'want' tomorrow

records were dirt cheap 10 years ago and now women will shell out $100 for the latest taylor swift vinyl variant #85
in 2001 my dad had 375 records. by 2007 he threw out over half. if he had kept every record a little longer he couldve got $1000 easily for something that only took up a few crates in the basement
point it, we never know

I had a big pole barn that was my grandfathers. Stuff had accumulated there for like 50+ years. I eventually just rented a roll off and got rid of alot of it. Hundreds of buckets of stuff, hoses, old appliances, feed sacks everything you could imagine. The stuff was accumulated because he saw a use for stuff at some point but there reaches a point where you need to wipe the slate. After I tossed alot of the non metal stuff I got a junk guy to go through and scrap alot of the metal on a 50/50 split. I told him to keep most of the hand tools, shelves of bolts nuts etc. pry bars, axles, and a few of the tractor implements. He scrapped everything else.

It cleared the place up alot and I'm happy I did it. I didnt find myself regretting getting rid of anything. At the end of the day what am I going to do with four bottom plows lol? Ultimately my grandfather would have liked the barn to be USED not become a storage pile for stuff.

kek my condolences, that stuff is definitely junk (if not just redundant clutter)

Tires can definitely just go to a recycler, but the motor oil is going to be problematic because it's likely contaminated/mixed oils (e.g. transmission oil, brake oil, engine oil, and so on). There are special facilities that will handle it for you, but it's going to cost you a bit of money. If you're a greedy jew and you don't want to pay people for a service, you can also burn it inside of the containers (don't ever let the oil touch the ground) and landfill anything that's contaminated.
The fence wire is also probably going to have to be landfill since it's galvanized and probably contaminated (American recyclers in particular are very picky). Just drive it to the dump and they'll take it as construction waste.

If you want to plug it into a USB port, you can get a simple PS2 to USB converter (they have a little microcontroller or something inside to convert the signal) which is also dirt cheap.

But during the pandemic there was a massive fear(irrational) wave going around. At least i didn't buy like pallets of ammo, guns, rv, cabin, tons of crappy "survival foods" like those prepared ready to heat meals. Some people overstocked on stuff they can't really sell. Honestly I'd be impressed if that rubber band ball doesn't instantly crumble upon being picked up

Don't shit on the sewing machine though. Vintage sewing machines are excellent compared to new consumer models. They're an excellent middle ground between the plastic trash of today and commercial units that cost a few thousand dollars. Obviously useless to OP if he doesn't use it, but you can easily sell.
>The parts to replace dont exist in stores anymore.
I have an old Kenmore sewing machine I use for literally everything and it has interchangeable parts with some 6 gorillion units that were manufactured between 1950 and 1980, not that I've ever had to replace anything. Takes the same bobbins and needles as modern machines and eats literally everything I feed it. I'm honestly shocked it hasn't destroyed itself given how much I abuse it sometimes.

If you imagine a SHTF scenario that's why all that stuff is collected. It's all analogue type of stuff. Board games for entertainment, rotary phones for communication, records for music, old computers for spreadsheets and other data collecting. Lots of writing utensils for obvious reasons. Rubber bands because rubber bands, you can make them yourself. And sewing machine to repair clothes, stocks of good clothes ect.

I think OP is prepared for the SHTF. He will be like the master leading the lost sheep to salvation.

If you want advice, I have some to give:
Call your municipal waste management folks. If they are unable to accept it, they certainly know someone who can (because that's who they send shit to). Also, if you haven't yet, contact your local university, agricultural extension office, or USDA center and they'll accept your agricultural waste chems at no cost (though probably not the oil).

2nd/3rd gen iPod touch
It was the best mp3 player (and still is)
The real question is what gen A is going to be nostalgic for. They live such an online life where everything is continuous and permanent that I don't think they're going to be "nostalgic" for fortnite or whatever because it's still going to exist.
I'd go as far as to say that gen A will perhaps be one of the first generations in a long time to be without nostalgia, similar to preindustrial humans.

The others are right, you've become a compulsive hoarder. I know because I am one and was at the same point once. It's actually quite common. If you take the right steps now you'll be fine however. First analyse your own behaviour carefully. Do you have other mental problems, that keep you from actually using this stuff? Look at it through that lense. There will be things most obvious that you'll have no utility of, even if you get better. No need to do all at once either, just go through one stack, throw out half of it or so and tidy it up properly, then another stack in a couple days maybe.
Also think about other possible issues you might have and what can be done about them, so you can actually use some of the stuff.

Nah, they charge a disposal fee to get rid of that shit, they'll waive the fee if you take the old tires with you.

I think it really just depends on the location. Back where I used to live (mostly white, fairly well-off town), all of the tire shops in town did free maintenance and free disposals. However, where I live now (lots of niggers) there are none of those places and basically no way to properly dispose of anything.

Otherwise, just post an ad with a burner phone (to hide your ass from the epa) advertising free drums of waste/reclaimed oil. Some people have junk engines they run off this shit for heat or electric idfk how it works, I knew a shade tree mechanic that told me he gives brake fluid to this sketchy shop "because they have an oil burner" idfk what that even means desu

>How do I figure out what shit is ACTUALLY worth keeping? I already have food and ammo and shelter items in another room.
Get one backpack - and imagine if you had to put on that backpack and walk to the middle of the forest. What would you put in the bag?
Spend a few days or weeks, figuring out the most important things you would want to put in that bag. Imagine if you had to leave behind your house and everything in it - what would you put in that bag?

Once you have built the perfect backpack, all of the stuff that is left in your house will become secondary possessions. At this point, you may begin to start selling things that hold value but aren’t realistic to hold onto.
Having the bag makes you realise that not everything is worth keeping and you will begin to sort through the REST of your stuff separately to that one bag.
The bag will be your fall back, but everything else will become secondary.
Eventually you will learn to only rely on the bag and you won’t rely on any of your secondary possessions.
Once that happens you will stop hoarding.

Not really. There are things that are coming back into value after they were thought to be worthless. The first example to come to mind is vinyl records. They went from worthless to a collectible 20 years after we all donated them to thrift shops.

Certain VCR's are now extremely valuable and sell for far more than their original price on ebay. Same with high end music equipment.

I was referring to his old PCs, anon, and your point about records is not a counterpoint.
Retro PC hardware has already had their return to consumer relevance, just like vinyl records. The equivalent to hoarding junk PCs in current year is the equivalent of hoarding low quality vinyls "just in case they become valuable like the nice ones did".
Additionally, vinyl records is more of a return of the medium, not the old records themselves. This would be like if personal computing turned out to just be a fad that fell out of fashion in the early 2000s (if only), only to become "trendy" again decades later. Then, the value of old PCs would rise as new production slowly ramps up to meet new demand.

yes

The point is carrying something with use (such as nails) is better than carrying something with no use (a set of collector’s vinyls or a book of stamps)

This thread is not to argue whether or not nails should be carried, it’s to point out that when it comes to “collecting” or “hoarding” there is always something with more useful application or utility and it’s up to you to sort out which one is which. I’m not here to argue on semantics of that, and what exactly should be kept, but just to hopefully offer OP a solution to their collection problem

Why would you flee? There's not enough wildlife to support even a fraction of the current population. You think millions are going to die then you can return and rebuild? There will be established communities by the time that happens. Why would they let a stranger like you in? Better off to stick it out with your local community and start farming and building right away.

You don’t have to sell them off.

I personally keep a collection of many things. I have $20k in poke cards and a bunch of other retarded useless shit.
The point is you have to be willing to let them go if it comes to it

You have to be willing to separate the two categories (essential things and non essential)
Only then will you be free from hoarding

While the concept of running into the woods and becoming an ebin survivorman is gay, having a bag full of important essentials is very valuable. There are numerous situations where one might have to leave home in a hurry, and having all of your important stuff (like documents, cash, medications) together in a single spot makes that a lot easier.
For example: fires, floods, earthquakes, planet of the apes, etc.

It's only worth something to collectors.

collectibles have something like a 50-70 desirability window. people often grow attached to things they enjoyed when they were young, and later in life they seek them again to feel nostalgia, but once that generation fades those collectibles lose much of their value because younger people no longer share the same connection.

Put all your “collector” type crap in boxes and stored in a cupboard somewhere as minimal as possible
And separate it from your “essential” stuff
Be ready and willing to leave behind the non essential shit if it comes to it
And get good at knowing whats essential and whats not
Thats my advice for hoarders

You're not outrunning a nuke, you're supposed to shelter in place.
>>520614432
Oxyacetylene isn't a blowtorch, but yea you can get some pretty light ones that would probably awkwardly fit in the bag like it would take up most of the space, but those usually with a handle and carrier anyway. You can get oxy propane but it's not much better than just propane.
>>520614670
I don't need or care about you respecting me. You freaked out because I debunked your backpack theory. I wasn't even bragging about the shop, my point was things that are important and critical to survival won't always be able to fit in a purse, and that also goes for things that are sentimental. Like ops sewing machine
You got the mindset of someone that's homeless or lives in a studio apartment and I'm not even talking shit here I thought you actually were homeless because they can only carry a backpack like that.
Id take a welder over a car any day. With a welder you have shelter, sustainable farming by repairing tools, the ability for power generation.
A car just runs out of gas or falls into complete disrepair with zero parts or serviceability

Why not? Im just saying the guy with the land and tools is more valuable than you. Your plan is anti human. He can trade his skills for food and become part of the community. He has useful machines. Your bag implies you are waiting out for the rest to die so you can prey upon the isolated and loot their supplies. You don't have a long term plan unless that involves creating a raider gang?

Id take means choose.
It will last longer and contribute to rebuilding civilization more.
Note: I know how to compress gas and roll my own wire. The welding machines will last decades or centuries. A car doesn't last a year without issues these days

If its unused in x years get rid of it. Tools you keep because always useful. If it's expensive, keep hold of it. If its supplies keep a hold of it if not expired. Raw materials are not that useful to keep a hold of unless you have a project planned soon to use them.

It won't work. You get hurt, sick, lost nobody will be around to save you. You are really underestimating how hard it is to be a lone wolf. Nobody lives like that and survives. Unless like i said you have an established cabin or something but even then you get sick or hurt you just die. Just keeping yourself fed will be a massive challenge alone.

And what about the future? You can't possibily just think your plan is anything but a sick twisted fantasy because you will get old and die and that means no more humans. But okay do what you want but nobody will trust or care for you because the bag implies you don't care about them. Your plan is to bet on other's losing.
