What even is a government shutdown ?

They don’t have the ability to pay most of their employees until Congress raises the debt ceiling.

It’s essentially a game of chicken, but with trillions of dollars.

People get nervous whenever a shutdown lasts more than a few weeks because most government employees don’t get paid during the shutdown (there are a few exceptions for critical jobs), which eventually leads to them seeking additional employment elsewhere.

Nobody does anything and nobody gets paid. The question becomes if we can go a full month with the whole government apparatus why not two months? Why not 4 months? Why not half a year? Why not a full year? Why not just shut down government forever?
