Detroit needs to be made beautiful again.
Back in the 1930s, the city of Detroit (once dubbed the "Paris of America") was covered in beautiful socialist realist murals, all of them commissioned by FDR's administration. These murals glorified the working people of Detroit by portraying them as heroes.
Today, Detroit is the beacon of ugliness in America. Those beautiful socialist realist murals have been locked away in a museum away from public view. Breathtaking old buildings have been demolished. Most of the city lies in ruin. Detroit music now consists of J Dilla "beat tapes" made by pushing buttons on a sampler and adding a distorted drum pattern, and songs by Eminem and Insane Clown Posse about hacking people to death. Not to mention all the illegal raves where people play heinous techno "music." Meaningless modern "art" is everywhere in this city as is graffiti.
I fully believe the reason Detroit won't recover to its past greatness is because of this ugliness embedded within the city's modern culture. When you are surrounded by ugly art and music, you start to see the entire world as ugly, chaotic and confused. This causes you to start losing faith in your fellow man and creates an overall sense of nihilism and despair. It doesn't matter if the auto jobs come back. It doesn't matter if all of those empty lots are replaced by adequate housing. It's the CULTURE of Detroit that needs to change before anything will be fixed.
Get rid of the graffiti and replace it with socialist realist murals glorifying industrial workers. Get rid of hip hop and techno and get Detroit's children learning CLASSICAL music like they do in China, and have public classical music concerts like they did in the Soviet Union. Rebuild all the beautiful old buildings again.
BEAUTY will save Detroit before reindustrialization.
