I don't know how they win the contracts but I would say it doesnt matter if you have a Glock or a S&W M&P. They are basically mechanically doing the same shit. Both striker fired plastic guns. As an aside, I never liked the 870. The ejector is riveted to the inside of the receiver - sweated in, really.
The receiver is heated, which expands the hole, then the parts are installed and when it cools the hole shrinks.
Then it is dressed off and the receiver finished so you cannot see the installation.
If it breaks or wears down, the only fix for 99% of everyone it is to send it back to Remington.
If I were going for a pump action, it would be a Winchester Model 12 or Ithaca 37.
