In Canada people generally smile at each and say hi or nod, or at least that use to be the way it was 15-20 years ago. Now the only people who do are other lifters/runners when passing at the park or gym, etc.

the companies that try this are on a downward spiral, I used to work for one, imagine chick fila, a lot of the people there are friendly because they're well compensated and happy to be there. Company I was with had a reputation for being like that but got inherited by some retarded manchild. Overnight everything was falling apart, the reputation still exists but they keep dumping money into monitoring the employees and ensuring they uphold the reputation built on how the company used to be, employees were naturally happy and friendly but they aren't anymore and turnover is crazy. It'll sort itself out though, most retail stores are a disaster, stocking going on taking up the entire aisle, other aisles bare and disorganized, and they staff one or 2 people to do everything in the store from register to cleaning to stocking, unloading trucks, garbage etc. They'd come out better liquidating all their locations and staff and being online only.

I stopped by McDonald’s the other day, just intending to grab a large black coffee. The line wasn’t long, but the guy at the counter was really chipper like, corporate-training-video chipper. So I said “Medium,” which, I guess, was supposed to be “It’s going okay,” but it just came out as a word like I was ordering the size of my day. Every place I've ever worked for did this rule. I spent 7 years working as a janitor in a hospital and they would ram this "Smile and talk within 10 feet" rule but I never once did it. In fact, I'd look away and grumble. They don't care and they can't enforce it.
