Just because it's a traditional Catholic translation. I think the Challoner revision, which is what you'll probably find if you search for the Douay-Rheims version, is pretty readable. I also think the Revised Standard Version, Catholic Edition is pretty good, and it's written in modern English

Rashomon and Seventeen Other Stories is the collection I'm reading but a lot of Akutagawa's work is worth reading. Also In Search of Lost Time by Proust, Count of Monte Cristo by Dumas, and Les Miserables by Hugo.
It's not nearly as meaningful as CoMC but Three Musketeers (also by Dumas) is an enormously fun and entertaining read and also has some based moments.
