Early 80's UK is thought of by many as a horrible time because we had rampant unemployment, the miner's strike and other stuff. So maybe not the early 80's (though all my memories of the early 80's are good, but I was a kid). The late 80's all that shit had gone, getting a job was easy and life was good.
Overall, for me, it was a great decade, as were the 90's and I would go back in an instant. I can, and have, lived without the internet.

I went to Home Depot and bought a welder, I had never even seen one up close, and watched youtube and learned to weld. I live on the coast and rust sucks so I wanted to at least do a 8/10 rust repair. In the 80's I think they screwed license plates to the floor and cover it in bondo.

The most important part in why life was better back then is that liberalization of economy had not really kicked in. Labor productivity has risen dramatically since then, but wages have been stagnant since late 70's and there has been massive amount of cumulative inflation since then. People either worked less or got paid better.

East Coast big cities but who cares about them. They're shit holes that only think their important because of the money flow.

There was also a lot less people in general. So less traffic, less shit skins, less people in stores and smaller crowds everywhere. So just calmer in general. You can mimic that entire vibe now but it takes serious money or luck (as in bought decades ago) if you live in a higher end area of any city.
Down side is the tech was absolute trash. No internet and all the easy ways to kill endless hours.

I miss the natural sky. I grew up near an air base and used to watch the puffy contrails go by and quickly disappear. In the early 2000s I first noticed that the contrails weren’t disappearing any more. Then I noticed the sky wasn’t deep blue any more, and the sun wasn’t yellow. The sky now is light blue with a silvery metallic haze, and the sun is white.
