That's because old traffic lights used regular light bulbs that would shine light at the sky and reflect off air pollution particles so you couldn't see the stars. New LED traffic lights only shine towards the ground.

The brighter/more neutral leds on street lamps are an improvement over the gross orange colored ones, but the brighter/white leds on car headlights fucking suck.
