You misunderstand. He's the last hope for the democrats in the sense that he beat Andrew Cuomo, who is the spitting image of a spineless DNC establishment rat. The only hope the Democratic Party has to regain some semblance of respect in the US is if outsider politicians can oust the old establishment from their seats. Otherwise the DNC is just going to keep recycling their same lap dogs over and over. This is most apparent in the presidential elections, but it happens virtually everywhere else in the country at every level of office.

Yeah, the youth in a major city that's likely highly liberal. The same value system doesn't apply 1 to 1 with say, suburban rustbelt voters.
That being said I think if they could actually reframe such policies as being for the middle class (which they often are), and actually fight back against Republican dominance in media messaging then they could have a shot. But that involves fighting corporate interests that benefit off of our cultures' post cold-war autism.

So people are more skeptical of a dem talking about background checks ("this is just the first step to gun bans") vs a republican talking about it ("maybe some kind of background check system can keep dangerous people from having them"). It's kind of like trusting a needle with a panhandler vs a mormon. Who would you trust to not use it to shoot heroin.
