We let the long march through the institutions just kinda happen because learning is gay or whatever, so now there's just no other path to prosperity for a young man. Every office job has HR manning the gates and requires going through an increasingly feminized higher education that seems to hate young men in every possible way. At least in blue collar you can just get an apprenticeship, spend your time mostly around other dudes and have a chance at starting your own business some day. Good luck taking your 20 years of experience at a hedge fund and starting your own, for example.

Although of course there's other factors, mainly fear of automation, but also the ever-spiraling cost of higher education and the attendant debt, competition with jeets, etc.

And the pressure from above is pretty simple, stated accurately and succinctly by Mr Rowe; the infrastructure that delivers modern convenience doesn't fucking build itself. If there isn't a class of welders, pipefitters, electricians, plumbers, machinists, construction crews, on and on, then all this shit we've gotten accustomed to having will just fall apart and not be replaced. I have a genuine interest in learning how to build homes, but I'm pretty sure if i go to school for it i'm gonna just learn to do it as a hobby and keep my job office job.

The people I've met in the trades claim they make good money but won't be honest about the hours and the actual take home pay after taxes and health/dental.

I'm a blue collar worker and I would recommend it desu. I work on oil rigs and get paid pretty well for not very taxing work. Most of my day is breaks, toolbox talks, monitoring machinery or waiting for someone else to finish their job before I can do mine.

Construction is one of the first fields to get rekt in a recession because it's heavily reliant on cheap debt

Trade babies know that ANYONE can do their job. I'm not talking about browns, I'm talking about the people who hire them in the first place. You can watch just a yt video and know how to weld in like 30 minutes. The problem is you won't have the tools for the job which costs thousands of $, and it makes no sense to buy them for that one job you need it for.

If someone figures out a tools for hire business most tradies will get decimated. The ones need actual backbreaking work are mostly safe though.

As someone who's spent the last 15 years welding on mine sites I can agree and disagree with you.
Financially, I earn more than my friends who went to university and studied something. Physically, they all go to the gym, go rock climbing, paddle boarding, shit like that in their free time. Me? I barely have the energy left to focus on a fucking video game. I drink a lot. Way too much.
I tried to get into the military when I was younger and genuinely didn't know what to do with my life. Fortunately I was rejected because I have criminal charges and a history of mental health problems and substance abuse. My friends who did make it into the military are a lot more fucked up than I am.
I have never had the attention span to study, despite always having good test scores (130ish IQ) and really couldn't cope with being told what to do by people I don't respect. There probably wasn't anything else I -could- do besides getting a trade.
It's a mixed bag, and anyone telling you "trades are for retards lol" or "trades are the be all and end all" are lying. You need to look at your life from an individual level and find what works for you.
Now I'm learning to sail and I'm hoping to transfer my welding/maintenance skills to an entirely new field.

"The Trades" is a meme that just gets repeated by terminally online people who know they would have failed out of college if they tried going. Take the collegepill. If you don't want to go to a traditional university for 4 years, find a good 2 year program at a community college that will guarantee you a job. No, they won't, because no matter what Mike Rowe says, most people just do not want to work that hard. The trades, even in 2025, are a great option for a young guy. But just as with academia, not everyone has the aptitude for it, or the physical ability. The skilled trade jobs cannot be offshored, and they cannot be instantly overrun by immigrants. If you can stick it out and become a master plumber or electrician, you can make the bucks, you can start your own company, and best of all, you will never have to kiss anyone's ass.

I'm a codemonkey and every single day I wish I got into trades instead. The benefit of CS work USED to be plentiful jobs and regular huge raises. That isn't the case anymore. Now it fucking sucks. I want out, but I'm kinda old in my mid 30's and I'm not sure I could start over in trades doing the tough grunt work they expect from a rookie. Feels bad, man.

Problem is that the old boomer tradesmen and skilled craftsmen who did the same job and worked with their hands for 50-60 years are retiring, we actually are in a massive skilled labor shortage.
Go to any american boomer house and you'll find a shed full of tools, a garage full of tools, and a basement full of tools, and there actually is a large segment of our population who would basically be handymen fixing anything and working on anything and working on whatever manual labor job was available that paid the best, all with decades of experience.

We don't have them anymore, you can't find a painter in most of america for under 60 dollars an hour, can't find a plumber that doesn't charge thousands, no tradesman will take small jobs because they can pick and choose.
There's such a lack of trustworthy and skilled tradesmen that even the most low-skilled of the trades still just gets job offers constantly and can pick whatever they want. My first year painting I got propositioned by like 2 or 3 people offering me jobs because they saw me just painting (poorly) my uncle's house. Skilled tradesmen, and ones that aren't alcoholic thief methheads, are in high demand in the USA. All of ours are retiring with no replacements.

I also know a guy who has a lawnmower repair business, only one within 50 miles really that's a brick and mortar shop, and he bought out the other 3 lawnmower businesses because they were all closing, he's got the last lawnmower/ small engine shop for miles but he's retiring and there's nobody to buy it.

When your population gets too wealthy and educated and there's no tradesman culture anymore you're in trouble, and america really is. This will 100% make housing prices go higher, along with basic home maintenance.

the money in trades is in having your own business. There is a world of difference between working at a company making 30-50 an hour for your boss doing what he tells you vs having 4-5 guys working for you and going back and forth between them to make sure they arent fucking everything up then taking home 10k a month.

Like if you dig ditches for a living you make minimum wage or say 20$ an hour. Real world example: say it will take you 4 hours to do the work digging a hole to get at a pipe for maintenance. but your boss is being paid 200$ to dig the hole and fidget with the pipe which he does himself in like 45 mins. so he pays you 20x4 (80$) then gets paid 120$ for his 45 mins of work fidgeting with the pipe.

Thats where the money in trades is, managing a bunch of drugged up fuck ups (unless your some code inspector guy but nevermind that)
