You kind of answered the question here.
Public transportation do work very well when its a small country or area. But The US is so incredibly large its insane.
Take Manhattan. It worsk very well as far as I know except crime and all the other negative things about it. But NY is a very great constructed city with the grid system and everything.

LA on the other hand would be impossible.

Everything over here in Europe and even big cities are so incredibly dense that it works. Beyond that you are doomed to have a car unless you have a lot of time on your hands.

When public transport works as intended in a white country, it’s fantastic. But a lot of it has been privatised, and most European countries are on their way to American levels of immigration. If transport is nationalised, costs still go through the roof because of unions and friends of friends in government getting their feet under the table.

Luxembourg has about 60 people living in it, so we can’t use that as any sort of gauge

I love napping in public transportation. When I'm on my way to work, I'll catch up on sleep, and when I get home, I'll close my eyes too. Many people read on the subway and public transportation in general, you always see someone with a book.
